Diamond Multimedia Viper V770 Ultra
The Viper V770 Ultra is yet another powerful video card in Diamond Multimedia’s considerable lineup.
It features all the usual stats you’d expect from a video card based on NVIDIA’s RIVA TNT2 Ultra graphics chip. The Viper V770 Ultra supports both AGP 2X and 4X and has 32MB of SDRAM.
The Diamond Multimedia Viper V770 Ultra also has a maximum resolution of 2,048 x 1,536, refresh rates from 60Hz to 200Hz, and a 32-bit color depth, so anything that appears on your monitor should
look fantastic. In addition, the card sports a fast 300MHz RAMDAC and supports the Direct3D and OpenGL APIs. You can use the card with Win9x or WinNT4.0.
The Viper V770 Ultra has a reputation for being a powerful video card. We found that it did not quite live up to the expectations, particularly in our SYSMark 98 test; it placed near the bottom of the pack
during that phase of our tests. The Viper V770 Ultra’s overall SYSMark 98 score was 184, which was only good enough for fifth place among the video cards we tested. This ties it with the 3dfx
Voodoo3 3500 for second to last. However, this is only a couple of points behind several of the cards that beat it. The Diamond Multimedia Viper V770 Ultra’s office productivity and content creation
scores were also 184. At least this video card is consistent.
The Viper V770 Ultra fared slightly better in our Quake II test. It posted frame rates of 85.9fps at a
resolution of 640 x 480 and 63.3fps at a resolution of 1,024 x 768. These are both pretty good scores, ranking third and fourth, respectively.
The Viper V770 Ultra faltered a little in our next test, the 3D Mark benchmark. It scored 4,365 total points. Although this is a decent score, it’s still only good enough for fifth place.
Diamond Multimedia’s Viper V770 Ultra can pack some punch, but other contenders edged it out in each category. We expected it to post better numbers than it did.
